Chapter Four

Beginning on the first day he could possibly be returning, Elizabeth dressed with extra care, wearing her best day dress and taking more than usual care with the arrangement of her hair. Unfortunately, snow had begun to fall more heavily, and after two days of such preparations, she was still waiting. She told herself that she was simply worried about his safety, but on the morning of the third day past a full week of his absence, Elizabeth realized that she was more than worried. She was actually missing his presence. She missed the way he had timed his morning rides to end at the same time she was completing her walks so that he could escort her back to the house and have breakfast with her. She missed him discussing books with her and sometimes playing chess in front of the fire in his study. She now recognized that he had been courting her in a fashion since her arrival at Pemberley. And she realized that she really did care for him. Am I in love with William?

A groom came into the drawing room early that afternoon to announce that the coach had been seen approaching the boundary of the estate. She was overcome with emotion and excitement. She was suddenly aware that she must see him alone before he came into the house. She hurriedly whispered, "Georgiana, tell William that I will be in the garden," as she grabbed her shawl and rushed out of the house. He will know exactly where in the garden to find me.

After a few more excruciatingly long minutes, she heard the carriage wheels on the gravel drive in front of the house. Darcy jumped from the carriage without waiting for the step to be lowered and met Georgiana on the entrance steps while his eyes searched for Elizabeth. When he was told him where to find his betrothed, he gave his sister a perfunctory hug and hastened into the garden, taking long strides to the place that held his heart.

And there was Elizabeth. She rushed to him, threw her arms around his waist, and laid her cheek against his chest. “William, I have missed you!”

He wrapped his arms around her realizing that she fit perfectly just below his chin. “Well, this is a nice surprise, Elizabeth! I have you missed too,” he whispered and kissed her hair.

Pulling away enough that she could look up at him, her eyes gleaming with tears, she said, “Well, here is another surprise. I have thought of you every day, almost constantly. I think I may be in love with you.”

His face lit up with a huge grin, exposing the most charming pair of dimples. Elizabeth thought to herself, how could I have ever wondered if his face would crack if he smiled? He looked into her sparkling green eyes and noted the look he recognized as playful. He bent to place a gentle kiss on her mischievously smiling lips.

Elizabeth raised her hands to his chest and tilted her head to him for another kiss.
